Download drivers from one computer to another

Such was the situation for a Rosewill-branded PCI wireless network adapter that we recently installed on Windows 10 without an original installation disc or traditional installer. Not having an Internet connection on a new OS can be particularly annoying because you can't get online to search for the drivers.

After trying to install the card on Windows 10 with many files from around the web downloaded elsewhere , we discovered that you can export drivers for third-party devices from one copy of Windows to another -- great news seeing that we had a previous instance of Windows on another drive where the Wi-Fi card was installed and functional. If you need to identify a specific piece of hardware or the location of a driver file , the easiest method may be from Windows' "System Information" application, which can be launched by searching Start or Run for msinfo You can also generate a list of drivers by entering any one of these lines into a Command Prompt excluding the notes afterward.

Some of the commands in this article may require administrator privileges and an elevated Command Prompt can be opened by right-clicking cmd. While entering any of these commands should produce a list of drivers, each one outputs different information and formatting.

Also note that you can copy one of those lines and then right-click anywhere in your Command Prompt window to paste the text. If that isn't working, right-click the Command Prompt's title bar the Windows bar on top , go to Properties and enable "QuickEdit Mode.

I'm installing an old printer HP DeskJet ck on Windows 10 bit , and HP has not produced a driver to support this printer with this operating system, so obviously it is not automatically recognized by my operating system.

Typically, here's how I would resolve this problem: 1 Open Control Panel 2 click on "Devices and Printers" 3 click on "Add a printer" 4 In the next dialog box, Windows will attempt to find my printer. After it fails, I click on "The printer that I want isn't listed.

After a few minutes, more printers are added to the list. My printer is still not on this list, BUT some very similar printers are on the list. I choose one of the similar printers and everything works perfectly. Here's the problem I've been having recently: In step 8, Windows Update is failing to update the printer list. It says "Try again later. I've searched online and tried several methods to "reset" Windows Update, but I keep getting the same result "try again later".

Create a folder on a USB thumb drive or external hard drive attached to the Internet-enabled computer. Move the driver downloads for your specific devices into this folder. It helps to create subfolders named for the types of devices such as Sound, Video and Network.

Connect the external or USB drive to the target computer and install the driver packages one at a time.
